"One deep calls another! The depths of my multiplied miseries call, loudly call, on the depth of Your many mercies. Even that mercy where You pardoned my sin and helped my infirmities; that mercy where you sanctified me by Your grace and comforted me by Your Spirit; that mercy where You delivered me from hell, and gave me heaven..." - Robert Mossom, 1657
The Scriptures give us five examples of cries from an anguished soul.
Let's examine them and glean the important truths that Holy Spirit would have us receive today.
Psalm 6:2 says - "Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed."
"Have mercy upon me, O LORD" - I deserve destruction, but let me have mercy. I am not thinking of any goodness or greatness of mine at this point. I plead my sin and smallness in Your sight. I have no merit, and I deserve everything that I feel. In view of my great sin, suffering, and danger - be gracious unto me. Show me Your compassion. Remove this present source of trouble from my life - my sin, sickness, pain, enemies, and fear of going to Hell if I should die.
"...for I am weak..." - I am like a dying plant that is drooping. I am like the fields in a time of drought. My sense of sin has spoiled any pride in me and my mental sorrow and anguish has overcome all of my strength. Lord, please pity me...give me strength...deal gently and tenderly with me...Don't crush me.
"...O LORD, heal me..." - There is not a doctor who can cure my ailments. I am diseased in body and soul. Only You can help me.
"...for my bones are vexed" - The very frame of my body is shaken, crushed, and afflicted by the anguish of my sin-sick soul.
Psalm 6:4 says - "Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for Thy mercies' sake."
"Return, O LORD, deliver my soul..." - I once served You. You were Lord of every area of my life. I basked in the light of Your countenance. But I backslid. I turned from righteousness to sin. I chose my own way over Yours. I pursued after the idols of this world rather than after You. I gave my affections to other lovers rather than You.
Your absence from my life is so troubling. My sin and its effects of death surround me. Please, return unto me, O Lord. Once again, be the Lord of my life. Come and "deliver my soul" from further sinning... sinking deeper into the "miry clay"...and perishing in Hell where there is no return.
"...save me for Thy mercies' sake" - I have nothing to claim in Your sight. I stand GUILTY - as charged! Lord, intervene on my behalf. Stretch out Your right hand of mercy and rescue me from the "angry waves" of death. Deliver my soul from all trouble and danger.
Psalm 25:6 says - "Remember, O LORD, Thy tender mercies and Thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old."
"Remember, O LORD" - Need I remind You how You have always been so good to me. The deeds of love that You once worked on my behalf - do them again. Continue Your favor unto me. You never changed; I was the one who had changed.
"...Thy tender mercies and Thy lovingkindnesses..." - Let me once again witness Your acts of mercy and compassion towards me. It is Your nature to show mercy - to be tender, loving, and kind.
"...for they have been ever of old" - I am deeply moved by Your unceasing, unchanging, constant, and never failing Love. You are such a Good God. You always have been and always will be - from eternity unto eternity.
Psalm 31:7 says - "I will be glad and rejoice in Thy mercy: for Thou hast considered my trouble; Thou hast known my soul in adversities."
"I will be glad and rejoice in Thy mercy" - I've enjoyed Your mercies of the past. For them, I am so grateful. But for tomorrow's mercies, I am hopeful and filled to overflowing with joy.
"...for Thou hast considered my trouble" - What a Great God You are! Though others may not notice, You see all of my troubles. You weigh them...fix a boundary around them. They are a matter of great concern to You.
"...Thou hast known my soul in adversities" - Others forsook me because they did not understand. But You understand all of my feelings of sorrow and anxiety. You know and share my pain. You wait to see if I will be humbled for my sin...submit to Your will...be changed for the better by my affliction. When I am cast down, You are there to lift me up.
Psalm 51:1 says - "Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of Thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions."
"Have mercy upon me, O God..." - My heart is crushed and broken by the consciousness of my own sin. I am not here to justify myself... make excuses for my actions...or vindicate my conduct. If You don't show me mercy, then I am undone and ruined.
"...according to Thy lovingkindness..." - I know that You are inclined to pity the miserable. My sin has brought such misery of soul. Come and show forth Your compassion and goodness unto me.
"...according unto the multitude of Thy tender mercies..." - My sin is great, but Your supply of grace is vast...Your acts of mercy are numberless toward the guilty and undeserving. Let Your heart be moved in pity for my soul.
"...blot out my transgressions" - My record reveals many acts of rebellion. Come and erase my sins so that I will no longer have any remembrance of them.
Perhaps this day you are that anguished soul who is crying out to God for mercy. Know this - The Lord Jesus is not mad at you. He wants to help you. He wants to deliver you from all of your troubles, woes, and sorrows and heal you of your sickness, pain, and heartache.
Lay aside all of your pride. Approach His Throne of Grace with no merit of your own. Humble yourself in His Sight, and He will surely lift you up (James 4:10).
Remember this today - "...He retaineth not His anger for ever, because He delighteth in mercy" (Micah 7:18)
Therefore, loudly call out of the depth of your multiplied miseries unto the depth of His many mercies. He will hear you and come speedily to your rescue. You can count on it - for that is His way!
He is a Gracious & Merciful God!
