"But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves." (James 1:22)
Matthew Henry, the renowned Bible commentator, made this remark on this particular verse of Scripture - "Bare hearers are self- deceivers." Are you a "bear-hearer" of the Word? If so, are you aware that you are sorely deceiving your own soul?
God does not want you to merely listen to the Word preached...just give a punctual attendance to it...or simply offer it your respectful attention. Multitudes imagine that they are doing all that is demanded of them when they hear it attentively. They are resting in the "bare hearing" of it. Resultantly, they have reasoned themselves into a carnal security.
What God demands is an obedience to it. What is heard must immediately be put into practice. In fact, the hearing of the Word will not profit unless it is acted out.
As powerful as the Word is - it will not have its rightful impact on your life unless it is "mixed with faith" (Hebrews 4:2). And faith is not really faith unless it is coupled with works. The Apostle James said it well when he said - "...faith without works is dead..." (James 2:26).
Always remember - it is not enough to remember what you hear...be able to repeat it...give testimony to it...or write it out. It must be obeyed! Otherwise, you will only be a bare hearer who is operating with a stupid, inactive faith.
