Benevolently Intolerant
In Psalm 135:5, David
confidently and boldly proclaimed -
"For I know that the LORD is great, and that our LORD is
above all gods."
Do you have that same
assured persuasion as he did?
Have you personally
experienced the greatness of God's power of supremacy over all
other gods?
Are you daily rejecting the
temptation to compromise your Christianity and admit the
"Baal's" and
"Dagon's"
of this world to be your God?
"For I know"
- David was certain and clear on this subject. With a strong
emphasis on the personal pronoun
"I," he confessed his
unqualified conviction - based on his personal knowledge and
experience - that God was
"great" - unlimited in His power - and
"above all gods"
- infinitely superior to every imaginary deity that this world
could come up with.
Oh, Saint of God - is this
your absolute belief?
Can you also say as the
Psalmist - "For I know that the
LORD is great, and that our LORD is above all gods"?
If you can't, then there is a chance that you are joining in the
"song of the world" as the Ephesians
did in exalting something or someone as the "Great
One" in your life. In the case of the Ephesians,
their praise sounded like this - "Great
is Diana of the Ephesians"(Acts
19:28).
In other words, you are either saying with your words and life
that "the LORD is great..."
or you are affirming someone else as being worthy of your time,
money, admiration, and adoration.
Oh! Christian, do you "know"
that you "know"
that you "know that the LORD
is great" and
"above all gods"? Does
your life manifest your belief in the doctrine of God's
greatness? Is yours an assured persuasion? In what way is it
evident before all?
"...the LORD is
great..."
There is no doubt
about it!
Read what the Bible says on this matter -
Deuteronomy 10:17 -
"For the LORD your God is God of gods, and
Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which
regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward."
Psalm 48:1 -
"Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised..."
Psalm 86:10 -
"For Thou art great, and doest wondrous
things: Thou art God alone."
Psalm 95:3 -
"For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods."
Psalm 96:4 -
"For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised..."
Psalm 145:3 - "Great is the
LORD, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is
unsearchable."
Psalm 147:5 -
"Great is our LORD, and of great power..."
Our God alone is the Sovereign Lord. He is the One and only
Source from whence all being and power proceeds. He has the
power of a conqueror - none can resist or rebel against Him. He
has the power of a Judge - none can suspend or counteract His
will.
He is high and greatly exalted - not weak or feeble in any sense
of the word...almighty, infinite, and eternal... the one and
only Worker of Miracles Who is the confidence of His people and
Whose greatness is inconceivable.
John Trapp, a 17th Century Preacher, depicted him in
this way -
"He is a degree above the
superlative."
He is exalted over all the universe - having kings, rulers,
and dignitaries under His dominion, accountable to Him for
their decisions and actions, and serving His purposes and
plans.
Who would dare to
vie with Him in greatness?
Barnes' Notes offers this
comment - "Whoever, or whatever was worshipped as
God, Yahweh was supreme over all things. He occupied the
throne; and all others must be beneath Him, and under His
dominion."
Matthew Henry, the renowned
Bible Commentator, adds - "...as
King of nations Thou art great, Thy sovereignty absolute and
incontestable, Thy majesty terrible and insupportable, Thy
power universal and irresistible, Thy riches vast and
inexhaustible, Thy dominion boundless and unquestionable,
and, for the proof of this, Thou doest wondrous things..."
Yet, as we look around our world, we see a people
"worshipping and serving the
creature more than the Creator..."(Romans 1:25).
On whom can we throw the
blame for such wickedness?
Charles Spurgeon gave this answer in his commentary
entitled, The Treasury of David
- " 'Philosophic breadth'
aims at building a pantheon..." In
other words, it is the objective of the philosophies of
mankind to accept all gods and erect a so-called platform
from which each one can be worshipped and accepted by
all.
So we see that it is the worldly philosophies which reject
the belief in the One True and Living God Who exclusively
rules the entire universe. They reject the doctrine of the
greatness of our God for the belief that man is
"great" and to be
praised and exalted.
Yet, in Psalm 77:13, Asaph inquired -
"...who is so great a God
as our God?
In Job 33:12, Job flatly remarked that
- "...God is greater
than man."
"God is greater than
man..."
Oh! That these words were
posted on every billboard across the land and for all to
see.
"God is greater than
man..."
Do you believe that, O
Christian?
Can you say with utmost
confidence - "For I know that the
LORD is great, and that our LORD is above all gods"?
If so, then why is it that when you encounter trouble, the
first person you run to for help is another man?
Perhaps you are not as blatant in crying out -
"Great is Diana of the Ephesians"
- but in reality, someone or something in your life is
"great"
- "greater"
than God, that is.
Who or What is it?
Who or what do you rely on
for help in the time of trouble?
Your answer will reveal your God.
It's time to become as Spurgeon said -
"benevolently intolerant"
of the philosophies of men.
We must take on the conviction as he stated that -
"Our God is not to be worshipped as
one among many good and true beings but as God alone."
"...God is greater than
man."
"For I know that the LORD
is great, and that our LORD is above all gods."
Are you sure of this?
May God Bless His Word.
