Because He Is Our God

"He that gives being may give law, and therefore He is able to bear us out in our obedience, to reward it, and to punish our disobedience." - Matthew Henry

"To confess that the Lord was their God implied a commitment to live by His revelation." - Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Commentary

So many today are confessing that the Lord Jesus is their God, but where is their commitment to serve Him "come what may" - through the hardest of times and darkest of hours? As soon as things don't work out according to their plan or agenda, they immediately "check out" of Christianity.

The Scriptures clearly point out that the Lord Jehovah is indeed our God.

Psalm 105:7 says - "He is the LORD our God: His judgments are in all the earth."
Psalm 95:7 says - "For He is our God; and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. Today if ye will hear His voice."
Psalm 100:3 says - "Know ye that the LORD He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture."
Genesis 17:7 says - "And I will establish My covenant between Me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after thee."
Exodus 20:2 says - "I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage."

What does this signify?

Because this self-existent, self-sufficient, eternal Being is our God - we have the understanding that we are under His dominion and authority and He has laws or "judgments" that we are required to keep.

Because He is our God - we understand that He is entitled to our praise, worship, and adoration.

"We are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand" "...we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture." - Hence, He owns us as any Shepherd is said to own his particular flock. We belong to Him and He belongs to us. Resultantly, He feeds, protects, cares for, leads, governs, manages, and comforts us.

Because He is our God - we are required to give Him our immediate attention and instant obedience - "Today if ye will hear His voice..." His commands are to be obeyed at once - not daring for a second to put them off to a future time.

Just the fact that He is the Creator proves that He is God for only God can perform such mighty and awesome feats.

"...it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves..." - He brought us into existence - gave us being -therefore, He has an incontestable right to us and can dispose of our lives as He wills. He is our sovereign Ruler, and we are His subjects. We are moved by His power and devoted to His honor and glory.

He initiated "an everlasting covenant" with us - sharing with us all that He is - His wisdom to guide and counsel us...His power to protect and support us...His goodness to supply all of our needs and comfort us.

Because He redeemed us from the slavery of sin and Satan - "I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage" - He has acquired the right to rule us, and we are obligated to give Him our best service.

We know the Scriptures so well -

"He is the LORD our God..."
"For He is our God; and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand..."
"Know ye that the LORD He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture."

But are we carrying out our side of the commitment?
Are we really allowing Him to have His rightful hold on our lives as Lord, Shepherd, and Creator?

Deuteronomy 26:17 says - "Thou hast avouched the LORD this day to be thy God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His statutes, and His commandments, and His judgments, and to hearken unto His voice."

Have you done this?
Have you publicly declared Jesus Christ to be your Lord and God?

Then, as the above quote from the Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Commentary states, your confession of Faith implies a commitment to live by His laws, requirements, and standards. You are obliged to - "...walk in His ways, and to keep His statutes, and His commandments, and His judgments, and to hearken unto His voice."

Are you doing so?

We live in a day and an hour when "anything goes" Christianity is the norm.
Most people professing to be Born-Again do not have the foggiest idea what it involves.
So many want to "talk the talk," but how many are ready to "walk the walk"?

Who among us understands what it means when we say - "Because He is our God..."?

Folks, things are different when Jesus is given His rightful ownership over a life.
No one can confess Him as Lord and be disobedient at the same time.

"He is the LORD our God..."
" it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves."
"we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture."

And because He is our God, He deserves our obedience.

Does He have yours?

May God Bless His Word.
