See Thou Do It Not

"Nothing is more carefully guarded in the Bible than the purity and simplicity of worship; nothing is more sternly rebuked than idolatry; nothing is more contrary to the divine law than rendering in any way that homage to a creature which belongs of right to the Creator." - Barnes' Notes

"To worship any creature is idolatry, and God resents idolatry more than any other evil."
- Adam Clarke

"The gospel is the great means whereby men are brought to fear God, and give glory to Him."

"When idolatry creeps into the churches of God, it is by the preaching of the gospel, attended by the power of the Holy Spirit, that men are turned from idols to serve the living God, as the Creator of the heaven, and the earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. To worship any God besides Him Who created the world is idolatry."

"...for God will be all or none."
- the three above quotes are from Matthew Henry

Exodus 34:14 says outrightly - "For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, Whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God."

Hence, throughout the Bible, we are commanded over and over again to worship Him and Him alone -

Psalm 95:6 says - "O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker."
Psalm 99:5 says - "Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at His footstool; for He is holy. "
Psalm 99:9 says - "Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at His holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy. "
Revelation 14:7 says - "Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters."

Some would argue that the Lord Jesus is not God, yet the Bible clearly demonstrates that He accepted worship and was worthy of all glory -

Matthew 14:32-33 says - "And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped Him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. "
Matthew 28:16-17 says - "Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw Him, they worshipped Him: but some doubted."
Luke 24:50-52 says - "And He led them out as far as to Bethany, and He lifted up His hands, and blessed them. And it came to pass, while He blessed them, He was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. And they worshipped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy."
Hebrews 1:6 says - "And again, when He bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, He saith, And let all the angels of God worship Him."
Revelation 5:11-14 says - "And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped Him that liveth for ever and ever."

The Scriptures do not tell us that God is seeking after warriors - although His earthly army is comprised of them. On the contrary, He is seeking for worshippers. John 4:23-24 and Philippians 3:3 verify that fact - whether directly or indirectly.

John 4:23-24 says - "But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship Him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth."
Philippians 3:3 says - "For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh."

There is another who is seeking for worshippers and that is Satan! Read about his aggression and impudence in Matthew 4:9-10. Look how he unblushingly sets himself as the rival of God in soliciting divine honor from Jesus as He was tempted in the wilderness - "And saith unto Him, All these things will I give Thee, if Thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve."

Throughout the ages, it has always been Satan's objective to turn God's creation - man - from the path of self-denial and dependence on God alone. His desire has been for mankind to recognize his "primacy" in this world -  "...All these things will I give Thee, if Thou wilt fall down and worship me."

Resultantly, we read about people worshipping devils and idols - anything but God. This has been Satan's plan from the very start.

Deuteronomy 32:16-17 says - "They provoked Him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they Him to anger. They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not."
Isaiah 46:6 says - "They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down, yea, they worship."
Daniel 3:15 says - "Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made..."
Revelation 9:20 says - "And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk."

We also find in the Bible cases where one man or a whole crowd tried to worship the Preacher or Preachers and it was stopped immediately -

Acts 10:25-26 says - "And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man."
Acts 14:11-15 says - "And when the people saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in the speech of Lycaonia, The gods are come down to us in the likeness of men. And they called Barnabas, Jupiter; and Paul, Mercurius, because he was the chief speaker. Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands unto the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.  Which when the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard of, they rent their clothes, and ran in among the people, crying out, And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, Which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein."

If Satan cannot get people to worship idols, then he will most certainly tempt them to place more emphasis on the messenger of God than on God Himself. How many people today - maybe not literally but in a sense - are bowing down to Spiritual Leaders? How many are looking unto Healing Evangelists or their Pastor or Bishop rather than keeping their focus totally on Jesus?

Idolatry is a gross sin - no matter what form it takes on!

In His Word, God prohibits any and all idolatry!

Jesus and He alone is to be worshipped. He is the source of strength and help for the Christian. Although God may use other means, ultimately it is His hand that is doing the saving, healing, delivering, or providing.

We are all vulnerable to the error of taking our focus off of Jesus and placing it on a man or woman raised up by God. Even if Moses came back from the dead or an angel appeared to us, we must never place more emphasis on the messenger than on God.

Read what happened to the Apostle John when a messenger was sent from heaven with a revelation for him -

Revelation 19:9-10 says - "And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God. And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."
Revelation 22:8-9 says - "And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God."

We see a pattern here. A messenger is sent from God with a Word for John. John is so overwhelmed by the presence of the angelic being and the things that are happening around him that he "fell down to worship" before the feet of the angel.

What was the response of the angel on both accounts?

"...See thou do it not..."

What else did he tell John?

"...worship God..."

What do you suppose that the Holy Spirit is saying to us through this message?

He is calling His people away from idolatry - idolatry of all forms - unto the true worship of God.

Romans 1:25 tells us - "Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, Who is blessed for ever. Amen."

This is a subtle trick of the enemy. If he cannot get you to bow down before statues or images, then he will have you paying homage to men.

It must be understood that his main objective is to get the believer's focus off of Jesus.

As long as he can have the church looking to Preachers and Leaders, he is winning the battle. His ultimate goal is to prepare a people to worship the Antichrist. And this is how he is getting the job done.

In these last of the Last Days, it is so important that the saints obey this one command given in the Word of God which is - "worship God." This message must not fall on spiritually deaf ears but be heeded.

The Spirit of Antichrist is already at work. The Person of the Antichrist is about to reveal himself.

It's so important at this time that you have your worship of God in tact. He must be your all and all - having no rivals. Your focus must be on the Lord Jesus and none other. He must be the joy, strength, and confidence of your life.

If you are guilty of leaning on a Pastor or Preacher in your walk with God, then we have a message for you straight from the Throne Room. That message is -

"...See thou do it not..."
"...worship God..."

Need we say anymore?

May God Bless His Word.
