Why So Many Christian Leaders Are Falling Into Immorality

There is a downward course of depravity that is being seen among some in the Body of Christ. Unfortunately, it is found among the leaders. It all starts with pride, boastfulness, and seeking honor for oneself. It then progresses to the point where these same ministers are exalting themselves rather than their Creator. This opens the door for sexual impurity and shameful lusts. The Apostle Paul outlined this deviation for us in Romans 1. This message deals with the solution to the problem - which is that we must learn to "glorify God" as God - and glorify Him alone.

"A willingness to honor God as God - to reverence, love, and obey Him, would effectually restrain people from sin."
- Barnes' Notes

"Man's chief end is to glorify God..."
"To worship any God besides Him Who created the world is idolatry."
- both quotes are from Matthew Henry

In Romans 1:21, we read the words of the Apostle Paul under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit - "Because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. "

There are many today who are guilty of shutting up God's glory. They are yielding neither adoration nor gratitude to Him...neglecting to venerate His name, power, holiness, and presence...not adhering to Him as the one and only God...and not honoring Him as the Creator of all things and the sole Governor of the universe.

What did the Holy Spirit have in mind when He inspired Paul to write these words - "...glorify Him...as God..."? What does that entail?

It simply means to impart glory to Him...render Him excellent...make Him renowned...and cause His dignity and worth to become manifest and to be acknowledged.

This is not happening, and the results are devastating. These leaders - claiming themselves to be wise without God - are becoming fools instead. Rather than worshipping the glorious, ever-living God, they are seeking worship. Resultantly, they are entering into every sort of sexual sin - yes, even committing vile and sinful things with each other's bodies. They are believing lies concerning the only True God and His Word. Consequently, their lives are becoming full of every kind of wickedness and sin.

This is the case for "priest" and "people" alike. Sexual sins are becoming rampant in the Church, and the source of the problem is idolatry.

Mark it down as the truth - wherever there is idolatry - the worship of man or any other thing rather than the Creator - there will always be found every sort of sexual sin imaginable.

What is the solution?

Get rid of the idolatry! Stop the worship of leaders and Preachers! Glorify God and Him alone! When that is done, the sexual sin will be eradicated.

Throughout the Scriptures, we are admonished to "glorify" the Lord God -

Psalm 50:23 says - "Whoso offereth praise glorifieth Me..."
Psalm 86:9 says - "All nations whom Thou hast made shall come and worship before Thee, O Lord; and shall glorify Thy name."
Romans 15:6 says - "That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Romans 15:9 says - "And that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy..."
Revelation 14:7 says - "Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come: and worship Him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. "
Revelation 15:4
 says -
"Who shall not fear Thee, O Lord, and glorify Thy name? for Thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before Thee; for Thy judgments are made manifest."

All nations are required to renounce their idols and come and worship the Lord as the One and only True God. His sovereignty is uncontestable...His majesty is terrible...His power is irresistible...His riches are inexhaustible...and His dominion is boundless. Hence, they  ascribe greatness to Him and acknowledge Him for His power, goodness, and wisdom. They offer the sacrifice of praise to Him - proceeding from a heart filled with thankfulness, adoration, and love. The end of their desire is that He be glorified in all things.

The only problem is - as Paul described it in 2 Timothy 3:2 - people nowadays are "lovers of their own selves" and "unthankful." These characteristics are found among the lost and - sad but true - in the church as well.

We find both "priest" and "people" to be eminently selfish and self-centered. They are studious of their own interests and regardless of the welfare of others. They are graceless - thinking that they have a free right to the services of all men - feeling no obligation or gratitude for the services done. They take advantage of others. They do all from a principle of self-love and to selfish ends. Their love to God and man is in pretence.

People who are all caught up with their own selves do not have it in their hearts to "glorify God." They are simply too busy glorifying themselves or looking for glory from others.

"Because that, when they knew God, they glorified Him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. "

Is this your testimony? As a Preacher of the Gospel, have you craved for the worship of others? As a believer in Christ, have you yielded to "man-worship"? Do you exalt leaders over and above your own Creator? Do you fear men more than you do God?

Never forget - wherever there is idolatry, there will be immorality!

In order to keep this sin out of your life, marriage, home, ministry, church, and nation, be sure to "glorify God."

"A willingness to honor God as God - to reverence, love, and obey Him, would effectually restrain people from sin."

Have the glory of God in your heart and eye at all times and in all that you say and do, and your life will be sure to stay pure and clean before Him and man.

May God Bless His Word.
