Perseverance Wears The Crown

"If we be constant to our duty, then, and not otherwise, we may expect the continuance of God's favor. Let those that are well taught, and begin well, take notice of this - if, they be constant, they are happy; perseverance wears the crown, though it wins it not." - Matthew Henry

"We cannot plead our promise of God, in our behalf, or in the behalf of our children, unless we obey His commands, and are ourselves faithful to His."
- Barnes' Notes

"If we perform our part of the covenant, God will not fail to perform His; if we improve the grace God has given us, He will confirm us to the end."
"Keeping God's commandments is better, and more pleasing to Him, than building churches."
- both of the above quotes are from Matthew Henry

God has a word for you today. It is this - "And if you will...then I will..."

Throughout the Scriptures, we find Him promising His people great and mighty things, but with every promise there is a condition to be met before the answer will ever manifest. The children of Israel had to keep His law. If they didn't, they couldn't plead the promise.

The main matter with Him has always been the sincerity and uprightness of His people's hearts in worship. They are constantly warned about becoming proud or presumptuous as the people of God. They are continuously called by the Prophets away from all forms of idolatry.

Even though he built the temple of God, Solomon was warned that the glory would depart - unless he and the people continued to walk in God's statutes. They were never excused from obedience to His law. There was no shelter to be found from His Judgment in case of disobedience.

Their privileges never purchased for them a dispensation to sin. They could only expect the continuance of His Favor as long as they continued in the observance of His commandments.

Are you getting the picture? Are you hearing what the Spirit of the Lord is saying to the Churches?

"...if you will...then I will..."

In 1 Chronicles 28:7, we read God's word to David concerning his son Solomon - "Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he be constant to do My commandments and My judgments, as at this day."

"I will...if he be..." I will guarantee that his kingdom will last - if he will be constant to do My commandments...continue to obey carefully all My laws and commands...remain determined to obey My commands and laws...or always do My commands.

In 1 Chronicles 22:13, we read David's words to Solomon - "Then shalt thou prosper, if thou takest heed to fulfill the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed."

"You will...if you will..." Solomon would prosper and be successful if he would do the things that God commanded...obey the laws and teachings that He gave Moses...and be careful to observe all the statutes and rules that He ordained.

In 1 Kings 6:12, the Lord said to Solomon - "Concerning this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in My statutes, and execute My judgments, and keep all My commandments to walk in them; then will I perform My word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father."

"If you will...then will I ..." In other words, if you will walk in My statutes...obey My commands and do what I say...or keep all My commands - then will I establish My Word...fulfill My Word to you...and do for you what I promised.

In 1 Kings 9:4-5, again it is recorded that the Lord said to Solomon - "And if thou wilt walk before Me, as David thy father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded thee, and wilt keep My statutes and My judgments: Then I will establish the throne of thy kingdom upon Israel for ever, as I promised to David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man upon the throne of Israel."

"And if you will...Then I will..." O Solomon, if you will walk before Me in integrity of heart and uprightness...walk before Me in simplicity of heart and in uprightness...serve Me in honesty and integrity...and be pure in heart and action - living the life that I have set before you - then I will establish the throne of your kingdom.

The Spirit of the Lord is saying to you today -
"If you will...then I will..."

To what is He referring? What words would you use to fill in the blanks for your life? What is God waiting for you to do before He can do what only He can do?

Reflect again on our opening quotes - "We cannot plead our promise of God, in our behalf, or in the behalf of our children, unless we obey His commands, and are ourselves faithful to His."

"If we perform our part of the covenant, God will not fail to perform His; if we improve the grace God has given us, He will confirm us to the end."

"If we be constant to our duty, then, and not otherwise, we may expect the continuance of God's favour..."

Since "perseverance wears the crown," are you wearing one?

May God Bless His Word.
