The Right Way Of Receiving The Word
"If, on hearing, I possess that which I hear, not merely have joy in receiving it, but possess it as my own, then it becomes a part of the substance of my soul, and I shall get more; for when the truth has become as substance in my soul, there is a capacity for receiving more." - Darby
"If you would hear the Word aright, be not only attentive, but retentive. Lay the Word up in your memories and hearts."
"Labour to keep in memory the truths you hear: the things we esteem we are not so apt to forget."
"How vain to hear much, but to retain little, and to practice less."
- all of the above quotes are from the Biblical Illustrator - New Testament
Are you a Good Hearer of the Word?
You may ask - what's a Good Hearer?
It is one who "understands," "receives," and "keeps" God's truth.
We find these three characteristics delineated in the three Gospels - Matthew, Mark, and Luke -
Matthew 13:23 says - "But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it..."
Mark 4:20 says - "And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it..."
Luke 8:15 says - "But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it..."
"...he that heareth the word, and understandeth it..." - This is one who hears the Word of God receptively and understands its sense and meaning. Because his interest is fully awakened and his attention aroused, he lays it to his heart - deeply weighing its design and importance. He understands it as a businessman understands his business. He feels the power of it on his heart - enlightening and quickening him. He has an application of its truth made to him by the Holy Spirit.
"...such as hear the word, and receive it..." - This man - with all readiness and meekness - receives the Word as the Word of God - not just into his head but also into his heart. He hears it after a different manner - with attention, sincerity, and simplicity. He reads, marks, learns, and inwardly digests it - laying it up in his understanding, memory, and affections. He seizes the truth that strikes him, steadfastly retains it, guards it with attention and care as the most invaluable treasure, and then fixes it into his conduct.
"...having heard the word, keep it..." - This man holds the Word fast - not allowing Satan to snatch it away...vain thoughts to crush it... worldly concerns to stifle it...nor any evil influences to destroy it. He holds it down with great struggling against all opposition. He will not part with it nor depart from it. He allows it to mold his life.
After hearing the Word, what is your response?
Are you a Good Hearer who understands it to the point where you feel its power working in your heart?
Do you accept and embrace it and then look for ways to apply it to your life?
Do you allow it to settle in and then hold onto it no matter what?
It's not enough just to hear the Word. There is more required of you in order to get its full impact on your life.
Perhaps this is the key that has been missing in your spiritual growth.
Change your ways and start understanding, receiving, and retaining the Word.
Then witness how you will grow by leaps and bounds in the ways of the Lord.
May God Bless His Word.
