With God And A Penny
Has the enemy of your soul been tormenting you with your lack?
Has he been constantly reminding you of what little resources you have to meet your needs?
Have you given in to feelings of hopelessness and despair, seeing no possible way out of your misery? Then this message is for you.
"When the saintly Theresa of medieval times was ridiculed for planning to found an orphanage with nothing but a penny in her hand, she calmly said, 'With a penny Theresa can do nothing, but with God and a penny there is nothing Theresa cannot do.' "
- Encyclopedia of Sermon Illustrations
The devil loves to torment us with our insufficiencies and our lack. He loves to point out to us what little money, resources, assets, talents, gifts, education, intelligence, or friends we really have.
He will always emphasize our great need and then compare it with our "penny," so to speak. That "penny" may be very little finances, intelligence, education, talents, gifts, strength, ability, or human aid. If we are not careful, we can become easily discouraged or depressed, wondering how we are ever going to get out of the mess in which we find ourselves - having so few resources on which to depend.
One thing is certain - Satan will never remind us that God is our Heavenly Father Who is on our side. He is our Provider, Very Present Help in Trouble, Healer, Deliverer, Redeemer, Defense, Favor, Wisdom,  Knowledge, Strength, and Ability.
When placed in a predicament, we may have a tendency to fret against the Lord. We may look around at others and see how they have so much in comparison to our little. If we are not careful, we may begin to complain to the Lord, reminding Him of our difficulties. We may even begin to question His love for us as opposed to Sister or Brother So-and-So who seem to have it "made-in-the-shade."
It never occurs to us that God knows how to count. He knows what He is doing. He knows that Brother and Sister So-and-So have many resources while we have so few. Our needs seem to be so astronomical compared to others, and yet our resources remain to be little.
Has God forgotten us?
Is He aware of what's going on?
Did He make a mistake here?
Does He care for us?
Does He really love us?
God knows exactly what is going on!
Did it ever occur to you that He has only given you a "penny" because He is setting you up for a Mighty Miracle? He knows that your need right now is great, and your resources are so few. He knows that, humanly speaking, you cannot get out of your troubles by yourself. You cannot solve your own problem. No man can help you either. Only He can see you through this.
Did it ever occur to you that with only one "penny," God can pay the entire world's rent or mortgages? With one "penny," He can pay everyone's car note and still have some change left over. With only one "penny," He can put food on every table in the entire world and still have baskets filled with leftovers. With one "penny," He can pay off everyone's insurance fees as well as maintain every body, home, and vehicle to run smoothly and accurately. And with one "penny," He can provide education for every child, teen, or young man or woman in the entire world
You see - one "penny" in our hands is a mockery.
But in the hands of God, one "penny" is a setup for a Miracle.
What it all boils down to is this question - Where have we placed our confidence?
Are we depending on our own resources or on the Lord Jesus Christ alone?
Adam Clarke once said - "Begin, continue, and end every work, purpose, and device with God."
He also went on to say - "Self-sufficiency and self-dependence have been the ruin of  mankind ever since the fall of Adam. The grand sin of the human race is their continual endeavor to live independently of God, i.e. to be without God in the world..."
Could it be that God oftentimes allots us with a "penny" to meet our needs in order to show us our continual dependence on Him and not on any other?
Many times, we don't feel secure unless we have an abundance of resources in order to fall back upon. A "penny" shakes us to the core of our being because it simply is not enough to depend on. But we cannot look to the "penny;" we must at all times and in every place look to the Lord and trust in Him. Our attitude must be - no matter what I have does not matter as long as I have the Lord on my side. He is my everything. He is my all-sufficiency.
We are never to look unto another man to be our source of supply. Although God may and can use another to bless us, our focus must always be on the Lord.
Psalm 40:4 tells us - "Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies."
The "proud" are those who place their confidence in themselves. Those who "turn aside to lies" are the ones who depart from the straight path. They swerve from the true and honest to pursue the false and deceitful.
Can these kind of people be trusted? Yet many do not feel safe unless they have man on their side. Never mind the fact that he can be very weak, faithless, dishonest, selfish, fickle, ignorant, feeble, and capricious.
God cannot ever lie to us. He does not change. He is forever Faithful!
Psalm 118:8 assures us that - "It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man."
In other words, it is better, safer, and wiser to place all of our confidence in the Lord than another. He has great wisdom, power, and goodness that surpasses that of any man.
He is the fountain of all Good Who promises to supply our every need.
That is why Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to - "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths."
We can always count on Him to take the little that we have and use it for His glory. We can roll the whole course of our lives upon Him, believing for Him to work His mighty work and to bring forth our Best in return.
Psalm 37:5 says it this way - "Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass."
We are to commit our "penny" to Him, place all our confidence in Him as God Almighty - Who has all power, wisdom, and goodness to do exceeding abundantly above all that we could ever ask or think - and then trust Him to take what we have given Him to secure a glorious result.
Isaiah 26:4 tells us that "in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength." He is the Rock of ages. He is firm and unchangeable. He is an everlasting protection and defense for His people.
The enemy seeks to daily agitate us with our "penny" provision, but God wants us to have "perfect peace"(Isaiah 26:3) at all times and under all events. Never are we to cast away or change our confidence from the Lord to another.
We are to place ourselves under His government and follow His guidance.
Whenever He entrusts us with a "penny," and we become easily agitated and unnerved, what does that say about us?
Are we truly trusting in the LORD "for ever"(Isaiah 26:4) as the Scripture commands?
Our job is to keep our minds stayed on Him. His job is to provide. If all we have at this point is a "penny," then that is all that we need.
We can rejoice and be exceedingly glad. For God will take our "penny" and somehow and some way supply all our need "according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus"(Philippians 4:19).
What have you done with your "penny"? Have you buried it in the ground, so to speak?
Place it in the Lord's hands, and watch Him multiply it for His glory and for your good.
Then get your dancing shoes on for God is setting you up for a Miracle. When it is all said and done, you are going to have a "story" to tell. It will be stupendous! All who hear it will know that God is undoubtedly enough. We need no other!
May God Bless His Word.
