The Value Of Good Words

"A good word, well and wisely spoken, may do more good than perhaps we think of."
"Good words cost nothing..."
- both quotes are from Matthew Henry

"The abuse of God's gift of speech will lead to its forfeiture." - Barnes' Notes

What do good words do? What does the Bible teach us about good words?

1. Good Words Strengthen The Weak

Deuteronomy 3:28 says - "But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see."
Job 4:3 says - "Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands."
Job 16:5 says - "But I would strengthen you with my mouth..."
Psalm 27:14 says - "Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD."
Isaiah 35:3-4 says - "Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense; He will come and save you."
Luke 22:32 says - "But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren."

Good words encourage the desponding...confirm the halfhearted...and excite to action the fearful.

2. Good Words Uphold The Falling

Job 4:4 says - "Thy words have upheld him that was falling..."
Psalm 145:14 says - "The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down."
Hebrews 12:12
says - "Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees."

Good words fortify individuals against temptation...support them under their burdens...and comfort the afflicted.

3. Good Words Manifest God's Salvation, Faithfulness, & Righteousness

Psalm 40:9-10 says - "I have preached righteousness in the great congregation...I have declared Thy faithfulness and Thy salvation..."
Psalm 71:8 says - "Let my mouth be filled with Thy praise and with Thy honor all the day."
Psalm 71:15-17 says - "My mouth shall show forth Thy righteousness and Thy salvation all the day...I will make mention of Thy righteousness, even of Thine only...and hitherto have I declared Thy wondrous works."
Psalm 71:24 says - "My tongue also shall talk of Thy righteousness all the day long..."
Psalm 145:5 says - "I will speak of the glorious honor of Thy majesty, and of Thy wondrous works."

Good words announce the Good Tidings of the Gospel. They mention God's faithfulness and truthfulness. They cover His fidelity to His promises and show that He is worthy of confidence. They testify of what He did to deliver from dangers.

4. Good Words Bring Forth Wisdom Or Instruct

Psalm 37:30 says - "The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom..."
Proverbs 10:11 says - "The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life..."
Proverbs 10:13 says - "In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found..."
Proverbs 10:31 says - "The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom..."
Proverbs 15:2 says - "The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright..."
Proverbs 15:7 says - "The lips of the wise disperse knowledge..."
Proverbs 31:26 says - "She openeth her mouth with wisdom..."
Daniel 11:33 says - "And they that understand among the people shall instruct many..."

Good words are faithful, just, and kind. They are wise and gentle. They proceed from a mouth that speaks wise things. They are the words that proceed from the heart that has meditated on the wisdom of the Word. As the occasion offers, they are the words which are spoken to the purpose. They communicate spiritual knowledge and understanding of divine things. They guide and nourish by wise discourses and counsels. At the proper time and season...in the right manner...and using the appropriate subject matter, they commend knowledge and true wisdom by their use. They illustrate the proper time to speak and the proper time to be quiet - the words to speak and the words to leave unspoken.

5. Good Words Minister Grace

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says - "And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."
Deuteronomy 11:19
says - "And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."
1 Chronicles 16:24 says - "Declare His glory among the heathen; His marvelous works among all nations."
Psalm 45:2 says - "Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into Thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever."
Psalm 78:4 says - "We will not hide them from their children, showing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength, and His wonderful works that He hath done."
Psalm 105:2 says - "...talk ye of all His wondrous works."
Psalm 119:13 says - "With my lips have I declared all the judgments of Thy mouth."
Proverbs 15:4 says - "A wholesome tongue is a tree of life..."
Ephesians 4:29 says - "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers."
Colossians 3:16 says - "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom..."
Colossians 4:6 says - "Let your speech be always with grace..."

Good words are the means of conveying more grace or Divine influences to the hearts of the hearers. They oppose and preserve from the corruption of sin.

6. Good Words Feed Many

Psalm 37:30 says - "The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment."
Psalm 78:72 says - "So he(David) fed them according to the integrity of his heart..."
Psalm 119:13 says - "With my lips have I declared all the judgments of Thy mouth."
Proverbs 10:13 says - "In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found..."
Proverbs 10:21 says - "The lips of the righteous feed many..."
Proverbs 10:32 says - "The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable..."
Proverbs 15:28 says - "The heart of the righteous studieth to answer."
Ecclesiastes 12:9-10 says - "And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs. The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth."
Jeremiah 3:15 says - "And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding."
Daniel 4:27 says - "Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee..."
Malachi 2:7 says - "For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at His mouth: for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts."
John 21:16 says - "...Feed My sheep..."
Colossians 3:16 says - "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."

Good words will be centered on the Word of God and will feed others with knowledge and understanding. They will be "words of truth."

7. Good Words Heal

Proverbs 12:18 says - "...but the tongue of the wise is health."
Proverbs 13:17 says - "...but a faithful ambassador is health."
Proverbs 15:23 says - "and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!"
Proverbs 16:24 says - "Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones."
Isaiah 50:4 says - "The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: He wakeneth morning by morning, He wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned."

Good words consist of soothing and gentle language. They tend to comfort and benefit others. They make whole...restore peace...and persuade to reconciliation. They are "words in season" to those who are weary.

As we have seen, the Word of God deals specifically with our words.

What kind of words are you speaking from day to day?

Proverbs 12:14 says - "A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth..."
Proverbs 24:26 says - "Every man shall kiss his lips that giveth a right answer."
Proverbs 25:11 says - "A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver. "

There is great value in good words - words that are "fitly spoken" - words that give a right answer.

"A good word, well and wisely spoken, may do more good than perhaps we think of."
"Good words cost nothing..."

There is no excuse for not using good words in your every day conversation.

Never forget the words of our Lord and Master - Jesus Christ - "For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned"(Matthew 12:37).

Therefore, choose good words!

May God Bless His Word.
