The Real Purpose Of
Isaiah 24:11 tells us - "There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone."
This Scripture gives a true depiction of the state of every sinner. From the depths of their being, they are howling for someone or something to alleviate their pain and distress or to sustain them in their calamity.
Believe it or not - the Lord Jesus gave the church the directive on how to meet their need in Luke 4:18 - which happened to be the sublime objective of His whole mission. In this verse of Scripture, He, as the Messiah, declared - "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent Me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised."
In this verse, we see five sad conditions of the sinner outlined for us. We have the poor, brokenhearted, captive, blind, and bruised.
They are the poor in this world...the bankrupt...the destitute and impoverished...the meek and humble...all those who lack...and the rich naturally but poor spiritually.
- Who are the "brokenhearted"?
They are the ones whose hearts are shattered - those whose hearts have been broken by their external calamities, by many sorrows and tragedies, or by a sense of their sinfulness.
They are the ones who are bound by drugs, habits, the past, or religion. They find themselves locked in the prison house of sin...held by the Strongman with cords of sin...taken captive by the devil at will...and are his prisoners in spiritual bondage.
They are those who are sitting in spiritual darkness...sightless...having no spiritual vision...and totally ignorant and insensible of their spiritual state.
They are the ones who are pressed down by great calamity...overwhelmed, wounded, and abused....crushed internally, mentally, and emotionally...and carrying pain, agony, and regret.
This is the Biblical description of the world's sighing, sobbing multitude.
Where can they be found?
They are at situated at the doorstep of every Christian who claims to be Spirit-filled.
Why aren't they getting help? Why do we find them running to the psychics...to false religions...to the cults...to drugs...to crime...or to suicide?
Do you really want the truth?
The truth is that so many so-called Christians are running around the country declaring how "anointed" they are so that they can draw attention to themselves - not to mention trying to draw a following around their "anointed" self. And all of this is happening while the world is dying and going to Hell.
As the Prophet Isaiah said - "There is a crying for wine in the streets..." Oftentimes, "wine" in the Scriptures typifies the Holy Spirit. Hence, the sinner - whether he realizes it or not - is actually crying out for the "anointing" - the power of God to come down and set him free from his awful mess.
The question is - Where can he go to find the "anointing"? What church can honestly guarantee him after his visit - "You won't leave the way you came in Jesus' Name...bound, depressed, discouraged, sick or lame...For the Holy Ghost of Acts is still the same...You won't leave the way you came in Jesus' Name"?
The sad thing is that the poor, brokenhearted, blind, captives, and bruised are going to the assemblies but leaving the same. No change is manifested.
Here are five groups of people demanding the "anointing," but they are coming up short.
We as believers need to come back to Luke 4:18 and meditate on this Scripture once again. This verse clearly defines Jesus' entire mission on this earth. And because we are His followers, it should be our mission as well. When He declared - "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because..." - He meant to get across to us that when the Spirit of the Lord would come upon us, He would fulfill the same - "because." In other words, the Holy Ghost is given to the church for service and not for show.
So many are running from meeting to meeting looking for the "anointing." Granted - it comes through spending time with Jesus and living a holy and consecrated life. But there comes a time when you have to stop all of your running and start applying what you have to the hurting and bleeding all around you. The "anointing" is not for you to feel good. It is for you to be Jesus' channel of blessing, healing, and deliverance to those who are desperately in need of it.
How many more manifestations do you need before you will help your neighbor who is screaming out for deliverance from his pain and agony?
Perhaps, after running after every speaker in town...listening to every tape...and reading every book on the subject - you need to come to the realization that - after all of that - you still don't have the "anointing." You may have gotten a "touch," but believe me, Brother or Sister, if you had the true "anointing" that Jesus had, you would be able to hear the cries of the bound and depressed and you would be doing something about it!
C'mon, Church! let's stop being religious here! Let's get real! Everyone wants to be able to manifest the "anointing" or "touch of God' in their life and ministry! But the truth of the matter is - everyone just doesn't have it!
I believe that Jesus is asking His church today - if I should give you the "fire" of the Holy Ghost, what will you do with it?
Remember - it's not for you! It's for them - the poor, brokenhearted, captives, blind, and bruised. Even if you don't hear their screams for deliverance, Jesus does! And He wants to do something about it!
He will find someone who will carry His "anointing" and do with it as He ordained.
Will that someone be you?
May God Bless His Word.
